Vehicles that pay toll

Vehicles that pay toll

If you fall inside the scope of the kilometer charge, you have to purchase an On Board Unit that registers the kilometers driven on Belgian toll roads. The procedure is explained in the practical information section. Below you will find the most important specific cases that have to pay kilometer charge.
Crash absorbers
The reason is that crash absorbers are trucks that can carry goods. Tractors with a crash absorber that cannot transport goods (code TR + crash absorber) do not have to pay toll.
Hummer, Dodge, Pick-up, … (vehicle category N)
If the vehicle is registered in category N2 and its Gross Vehicle Weigth is therefore greater than 3.5+ tons, it has to pay toll. After all, it is regarded as a commercial vehicle, and not as a passenger car.
Gritter
Gritters are trucks (DIV code CV) that spread road salt. The transported good is road salt. For this reason, these vehicles do have to pay the kilometer charge.
Tow truck
These are tow trucks (DIV code DT) with or without arm or with loading platform. These wagons are designed to carry goods (the good is the towed vehicle). The tow truck is subdued but the towed truck is not.
Unimog
Every Mercedes Unimog and every 4×4 off-road truck have to pay toll, no matter what their registration code is.
Vehicles with a dealer license plate (Z plate)
Vehicles with a dealer license plate (Z plate) also have to pay toll as well as foreign trucks with a dealer license plate.
Vehicle for horse transport (vehicle category N)
If this vehicle is registered in the CV category or if it is older than 30 years (O-Plate in Belgium), it must still pay the kilometer charge. Horses are goods (in the broad sense of the word), like any animal. Also animals for private purposes. Whether the truck is an oldtimer or another vehicle is irrelevant. Only if the vehicle is registered as a camper van (category M), it does not have to pay a kilometer charge.
Crane truck
A truck with a crane falls into category N2 or N3, code CV (HGV) and therefore pays a kilometer charge. After all, this vehicle can still transport goods in a cargo box or loading space.
Vehicles of the category N1 with body code BC
Vehicles registered in the N1 category are tractor units. They pay toll provided that the tractor unit weighs more than 3.5 tonnes when you add up the weight of tractor unit and trailer (= GVW towing). See also box F3 on the vehicle documents.
