CO₂ emission class calculator
The CO₂ emission class calculator allows you to determine your vehicle’s emission class in just a few steps.
Vehicles with a first registration date before 01/07/2019 are automatically assigned to CO₂ emission class 1. This also applies to vehicles for which no legal regulation has yet been defined (such as certain heavy-duty vehicles).
Zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) are directly assigned to CO₂ emission class 5.
To verify your vehicle’s CO₂ emission class, three pieces of information are required:
- the date of first registration,
- the vehicle subgroup,
- the specific CO₂ emission value.

CO₂ emission classes are used to categorize vehicles and were introduced to help reduce traffic‑related CO₂ emissions and mitigate environmental pollution.
There are five CO₂ emission categories: CO₂ emission category 1 is the least environmentally friendly, while CO₂ class 5 is the most environmentally friendly.
What should I do?
If necessary,
• Refer the CO₂ emission class parameter of your OBU to your service provider
• Provide the required documents: Registration certificate, Customer Information File (CIF), and Certificate of Conformity (CoC), if necessary, to your service provider.
You do not need to provide any supporting document for CO₂ class 1.
The procedure may vary depending on the service provider; consult the list of active service providers in Belgium (viapass.be/howtopay/).
The CO₂ class obtained is calculated based on the parameters you entered above. It is your responsibility to ensure that the data is entered accurately. Although this tool was created with due diligence, no guarantee can be given regarding the accuracy, timeliness, or completeness of the CO₂ emission classes it provides. Only the legal provisions in force at the time the vehicle uses a road subject to the kilometre charge are authoritative for determining the applicable CO₂ emission class for that vehicle.
Validity: the classification of a vehicle belonging to CO₂ emission class 2 or 3 is valid for 6 years after the date of first registration. A new check is carried out after this period, and a reclassification may be applied if necessary. This procedure is repeated every 6 years.
