07 Dec 2023 Kilometer charge: what will change on January 1st

Brussels, December 7, 2023 – From Monday January 1, 2024, the following elements will be changed in the kilometer charging system: In Flanders, the tariff for 686 km of roads will go from zero to a normal tariff. A preferential rate of zero cents/km will be granted to zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) across the entire Flemish road network. However, the OBU remains mandatory for ZEVs. In the Brussels-Capital Region and Wallonia (Sofico), ZEVs will still be classified in the EURO VI emission category. In Wallonia (Sofico structuring network), the kilometer charge rates will be indexed. In Flanders and the Brussels-Capital Region, indexation will take place on July 1.

16 Oct 2023 Indexation of the kilometer charge in Wallonia on Jan. 1, 2024

The Board of Directors of SOFICO (Société wallonne de financement complémentaire des infrastructures) has approved a  tariff adjustment of the kilometer charge for Heavy Goods Vehicles in Wallonia. It will take effect on Jan. 1, 2024. The index adjustment is calculated based on the August 2023 consumer price index, thus following the price fluctuations of products and services in Belgium. The average index adjustment on January 2024 is +4.08%. The new kilometer tax rates thus absorb the price increase in material costs and labor in Belgium. Both are key components in the maintenance and repair of road infrastructure.

With the summer season approaching, Viapass is launching an information campaign to clarify in which cases motorhomes/camper vans, oldtimer trucks and vehicles for horse transport must pay a kilometer charge.

26 Apr 2023 New tariffs for kilometer charge for trucks from 1 July

As of Saturday 1 July 2023, new tariffs for the kilometer charge will apply in Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia. In Flanders and Brussels, this is an index adjustment. The tariffs for the kilometer charge were indexed in Wallonia on 1 January and Sofico (Société wallonne de financement complémentaire des infrastructures) will implement a tariff adjustment on 1 July. No paying toll roads will be added in the three regions on 1 July.

27 Oct 2022 Information on the use of OBUs in Belgium

In 2016, a kilometer charge for trucks over 3.5 tons was introduced in Belgium. That means that those vehicles must have an activated On Board Unit on board on all Belgian roads. Since the measure was introduced, almost all drivers have been complying with the regulations. Meanwhile, the system and its controls have evolved and can better target some behaviors. We see that a number of things could need clarification.

No paying toll roads will be added on 1 January. The tariffs for the kilometer charge in Flanders and Brussels were indexed on 1 July.

23 May 2022 Belgian regional Kilometer Charge brings in 822 million in its sixth year of operation

The Kilometer Charge for lorries that has been in force in Belgium’s three regions since 1 April 2016 generated 822.4 million euros in its sixth year of operation, which ran from 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022. That is 8.8 percent more than the 755.7 million euros during the previous operating year. The proportion of toll kilometres travelled by trucks in the two cleanest emission categories, Euro 6 and Euro 5, rose further from 95 to 96.6 percent. This was announced by Viapass, the interregional entity that coordinates and monitors the Kilometer Charge for lorries, when it published its annual report for 2021.

The tariffs apply to all Belgian and foreign heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of more than 3.5 tons and semi-trailer towing vehicles of category N1 with body code BC. No paying toll roads will be added on 1 July. The tariffs for the kilometer charge in Wallonia were indexed on 1 January.

03 Dec 2020 New commercial ‘green’ number plates from 1 January 2021: Only trucks with test drive plate fall outside scope of kilometer charge in Belgium

From 1 January, only trucks with a test drive plate will not be subject to the kilometer charge. Trucks with one of the other three number plates will be required to have an activated OBU on board on Belgian roads.

The software upgrade that caused problems with various Satellic OBUs as from April 23 was terminated. Users will not at risk any unjustified fines.

On July 17, exactly five years ago, the creation of the interregional entity Viapass was published in the Official Gazette. Viapass monitors, coordinates and communicates the kilometer charge for heavy goods vehicles in Belgium. For these 3.5 years of actual operation, the kilometer charge in Belgium has become an example throughout Europe. That's why, at Viapass, we are very flattered by Ms. Bulc's praise.
